April YP of the Month
April’s YP of the Month is…
Molly Corkey Flatters!!!
Molly’s journey with CYPT has been shorter than many, but she has made a tremendous impression! Her journey with CYPT began in the Fall of 2020 when she was chosen to take part in PRETZEL THEATRE, an international experiment in devised theatre with youth participants from Canada, New Zealand, The United Kingdom and the United Arab Emirates. Soon after the conclusion of this one-of-a-kind experience in global creativity, Molly had the chance to dive into productions when was cast as Myndeigh in the 2021 Cannonball Festival’s production of IN REALITY. She couldn’t have asked for a better introduction to the CYPT stage, as she was able to bring her 3 greatest loves in life (Theatre, Dance and CAKE) into one show.
Her experience as an actor in the Cannonball festival inspired her to take on a new role in the following year as the writer and co-director of LIPSTICK AND SCONES in the 2022 Cannonball Festival. Loosely inspired by Taylor Swift’s song “tolerate it”, Molly’s directorial debut succeeded in giving Cannonball audiences a space to “cathart” about the loves and losses of their lives.
Eager to return to the stage, Molly was thrilled when she was cast in her first mainstage show as Silvio in REAL BOI. It was this production which solidified her love for “puppet stuff”, which she has carried with her since.
After a year off to focus on her physical health, Molly is making her much anticipated return to writing and directing with her new show, PAROXYSM which will premiere in week 2 of the 2024 Cannonball Festival. While PAROXYSM stays true to the autobiographical nature of her previous works, Molly is pushing her craft forwards by taking an abstract, surrealist approach informed by her previous exposure to different theatrical styles with her latest project as she portrays her experience with epileptic seizures.
CYPT has given Molly a space where she feels safe enough to bravely bare her soul not only onstage as an actor, but behind the scenes as a director and playwright. She couldn’t be more grateful for the community she has found. While she may be graduating this year, CYPT won’t be able to get rid of her anytime soon if she has anything to say about it!
