December YP of the Month

Here at CYPT, we’ve just opened our Christmas show, and the holiday spirit is in the air! There’s so much to celebrate, but chief among those reasons is December’s Young Person of the Month – an absolute delight who we’ve been lucky enough to have grace our stage. We give you:

Maeve Baker!!!

Maeve stumbled into the world of Calgary Young People’s Theatre in the fall of 2021 with one of her best friends. Looking for a good excuse to spend more time with her friend, and wanting to dip her toes into the world of theatre, the two decided to enrol in one of the winter acting classes. After that Maeve was fortunate enough to get asked to work the backstage at the 2022 Cannonball Festival, where she met another one of her best friends. After that, Maeve auditioned for her first MainStage, Real Boi, and was given the role of Mama Petta, the poor mother of Pinocchio. That show changed her life forever, and she threw herself head first into the world of theatre after that. In the spring of 2023 Maeve auditioned for the 2023 Cannonball Festival, where she got the amazing opportunity to perform in the two person show Homing Pigeon as the role H. In the summer of that year, Maeve acted as Mrs. Peacock in CLUE, an experience that will forever be in her mind. In the early spring of the following year Maeve was fortunate to experience a new role, the role of the understudy in the ten person show The Inner Workings of A Concert Flute, after that show closed she immediately jumped into her very first show as a Stage Manager in the 2024 Cannonball show beached.. After that, she did the summer show again, but this time as the publicist of A Monster Calls. In November of 2024, Maeve auditioned for the 2025 spring MainStage The Smoking Gun, where she was given the absolute fortune of playing the badass art thief Hazel Hawkins. This was an absolutely incredible experience that she will cherish for the rest of her days. After that show closed, Maeve directed the 2025 Cannonball show That I May Cease to Be. Alongside her directing project she also played the role of Mother in the Cannonball show Enchanted Secrets. Maeve is currently playing the role of Mrs. Pemberschmidt in the winter show Mrs. Pemberschmidt’s Grade Twos Proudly Presents A Christmas Carol, running Dec 4th to the 13th. She is set to swing for the spring show My Own Personal Hell and to Stage Manage for the 2026 Cannonball Festival show The Hum. Theatre has really changed everything for Maeve, it has saved her life in so many ways and directly or indirectly it has given her almost all of her friends, and she has CYPT to thank for that 🙂
