Mat Mailandt
Mat Mailandt is a Calgary-born Actor, Director, Improviser and Arts Administrator. He has been working with Calgary Young People's Theatre as an instructor since 2004 and took over management of the company in September 2005. He is thrilled to carry on the tradition of providing classes, camps and performance opportunities of the highest quality to Calgary’s youth.
Mailandt has worked professionally in children's theatre for the last five years, either as himself or his clown character 'Toro', across Alberta and British Columbia. He has participated in the Calgary International Children's Festival since 2002, working as an on-site performer since 2005. He is a founding member of Kids Play Klassics, a touring children’s theatre company. He also is a professional improviser with The Improv Guild, and Associate Festival Director of The Calgary International Improv Festival. He graduated with Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Calgary in 2008.
Since taking the reins, Mailandt has directed for CYPT The Boxcar Children, Spooky Stories from Near and Far, and The Jungle Book, The Compleat History of CYPT, The Adventures of Pinocchio, The Daily Mischief, and the 2009 CYPT Improv Team for the 2nd Annual International Improv Festival. Each production has been met with much success and positive feedback. The sight of kids shining onstage, which first drew Mailandt to Theatre for Young Audiences, continues to thrill him. CYPT provides him with the unique opportunity to work one-on-one with young actors in productions and classes. Their enthusiasm and willingness to try anything is a source of constant inspiration and as such Mat feels he is constantly growing as a theatre artist though working with CYPT’s ever creative students!
