What’s New at CYPT?

Spring is almost upon us.  Which means, thank goodness, that fall has come and gone and winter is almost finished!  And what a fall and winter we’ve had at CYPT.  We’ve produced three shows, a ton of classes and had a lot of fun doing it.

First off we had a great run of Spooky Stories From Near and Far, our Story Theatre show for 2006.  We rehearsed for all of September, October and part of November.  Based on scary stories from around the globe, this show toured ten libraries and one school over two weeks.  The actors really stepped up to the challenge of touring a show, and the audience response was great!  I really enjoyed directing each and every one of them.

The fall semester of classes also went well, including our Act One pre-school class, Introductory Story Theatre classes, our improv class with Rick Hilton and our ever- popular Animation Exploration.  I had the pleasure of dropping in on a few of the classes and final presentations and some really great work was being done.  From the final improv class, which was a cabaret style show led by the students themselves, to the short films created by our young animators, creativity was abound!  Thanks to Rick, Dorie, Paula, Laura, J.F., and Joel for all their great work as instructors!

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer was a smashing success thanks to fifteen eager young actors and the brilliant direction of Kristin Eveleigh.  You’ll hear more from Kristin and her experiences working on the show in this newsletter!  The show was performed at the Vertigo Studio Theatre, to large audiences each and every night!  At times I even forgot I wasn’t at a professional production!  Gillian Pickney was on board for this project, as the fearless and always smiling stage manager.  Gill is the resident stage manager for the 2006/07 season, and we couldn’t be more pleased to have her on board.

Our most recent show was The Jungle Book. This play transported the actors and audience alike to the depths of the Indian Jungle.  I directed the show, but I couldn’t have done it without the help of the choreographer Jaime Marr and the Assistant Director Jason Long.  Jaime did a phenomenal job transforming our young actors into creatures of the jungle.  It was amazing to see how wholeheartedly the actors embraced the sometimes very difficult movement and dances.  Jason

lent his talents as a director to the show, providing invaluable second opinions and extra individual coaching to students that would not have been possible in his absence.  Thank you very much to the both of you!

We’ve also just completed our casino fundraiser, CYPT’s largest single fundraiser of the year.  Thanks to all of you who came out and volunteered.  Without your support, the casino would not have been possible.

It’s hard to wrap up six months in six paragraphs!  If you’d like to find out more about CYPT’s season, don’t hesitate to give me a call at 230.2664.  I’d love to fill you in on more details.

Cheers,

From the Director of Tom Sawyer

The greatest part about working on The Adventures of Tom Sawyer for Calgary Young People’s Theatre was working with and watching the kids each show that they performed. I watched every performance backstage and I was blown away at how these kids continued to play and discover new things each performance that they did. Each and every one of them took each show that they did as an opportunity to learn more and discover more, and that is very mature quality for an actor.

These kids taught me so much in my 4 months with them. They came together as a group right off the bat, and were there to support each other and learn from each other, and now they have each made some great friends. I truly miss working with each and every one of them, and I look forward to seeing other projects that they will take on in the future. I think that this has been one of my most memorable experiences in theatre, and in doing it I was able to meld two things that I truly love, directing and working with young people. Thank you to Mat for the opportunity and to all the parents for there help and support and dropping of their kids each rehearsal, and especially to Gillian and the entire cast to Tom Sawyer. I would name you all but it might take up an entire page.

CYPT Star Profile!

"The purpose of playing , whose end, both at the first and now, was and is, to hold, as twere, the mirror up to nature."

-Hamlet Act 3 Scene 2

That's one of my philosophies when it comes to the wonderful world of theatre. I know maybe a little cliché to quote Hamlet, but it’s true!

When I'm up on stage, giving it all I got, I'm doing it because I want to portray some kind of message. Whether it concerns human nature or the true meaning of life, acting is meant to hold a mirror up to our daily surroundings.

CYPT Star!
Lars as Grandpa in The Boxcar Children, February 2006

My name is Lars Renborg, and I'm fifteen years old in grade ten at Central Memorial. I've been with CYPT for pretty much my entire theatre career. They've given me the opportunity over the years to grow as an actor and a person in a friendly environment. My first production with them was probably about five years ago when I did a summer camp. It was then I figured out how much I enjoy the stage, and the life of a thespian. Some of my past productions include: Twelfth Night (Valentine), Bang Bang You're Dead (Matt), The Boxcar Children (Grandpa), and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (Tom). Every time I do a production I find myself wanting to learn more, and experience as much as humanly possible. There's so much to know about acting, the process never seems to end! I think my favourite role that I have ever had the privilege to play is the Grandpa for Boxcar children, simply because of the character traits and physicality that I had to take on to become that character. Believe it or not it’s harder that it looks to be an old man! I've always enjoyed taking on characters and truly becoming them in a show. We'll see what other types of doors in the theatre world that CYPT will open to me in the near future.

A New CYPT Team Member!

ello Everyone!  My name is Kristy Reyner and I am the newest member of the Board of Directors.  I am thrilled to join CYPT as the Volunteer Coordinator, and am excited to be working with many of you in the future. Volunteers are a huge part of what makes CYPT so successful. Without, them we couldn’t do all the amazing shows and classes we do!

As I settle into the role one of my first tasks will be to compile a volunteer database for our various events. From being an usher at a production, helping at a summer camp or working at a volunteer casino, you can help. My first experience with CYPT volunteers was at February’s casino which was completely run by friends of CYPT- in other words, people just like you! It was a great success and lots of fun. If you are interested in volunteering in the future, or even if you aren’t sure but would like information on upcoming volunteer opportunities, please send your name and a contact number to volunteer@cypt.ca.  We look forward to hearing from you!

Warmest Regards,

Kristy Reyner

Spring Break Drumma Camps!

For the last few years, CYPT has combined a little drumming, a little acting and a lot of fun to create: Drumma!  Back by popular demand, this camp will see the kids create an original script and perform it, and learn the basics of West African drumming.

The Camp is taught by the always exciting Barb Burfoot! Barb has studied and performed African percussion since 1995. Over the years, she has shared her love for traditional rhythms with kids of all ages – through drum clubs, school residencies, workshops and her own children’s West African ensemble.

The camp runs from April 2-6 2007, 9 am until 4 pm.  At the end of the week the kids will perform a play of their own creation that’s sure to be a very drum-matic experience!  Pre-care and post care is available. Half-day pre-schooler camp is also being offered!  Call 230.2664 or log onto www.cypt.ca for more info.
