What’s New at CYPT?
Calgary Young People’s Theatre has kicked our 15th anniversary season off to a great start! First we celebrated this momentous year with a huge gala party at the Engineered Air Theatre. Thank you to all who attended, it was the perfect way to celebrate our history and look forward to the future.
Then, Fractured Fairy Tales, our first production of the season, toured Calgary libraries with their unique take on some classic stories. Led by professional playwright Ethan Cole, this program was a huge success and thoroughly enjoyed by families across the city. As well, we had another great season of fall classes and are looking forward to starting up again in January. Our winter programs are filling up quickly, so register soon!
Next, we opened our production of Robin Hood at the Vertigo Studio Theatre, directed by Tom Sawyer director Kristin Eveleigh. The show was a huge hit, and enjoyed by all! Coming up this February, we look forward to the re-mounting of CYPT’s inaugural production, The Adventures of Pinocchio, directed by Artistic Director, Mat Mailandt. Opening on Valentines Day, this show promises to be great fun for the whole family!

Of course, this spring, CYPT is back with our wildly popular spring DRUMMA-Camp. Taught by veteran instructor Barb Burfoot, an expert in West African drumming, this 5-day camp will give kids a chance to perform a play of their own creation at the end of the week while learning some new grooves. Register now to guarantee a spot! As always, visit us at our website www.cypt.ca or call us at 230-2664 to find out more or register. Just Imagine – 15 Years! Wait until you see what we do in the next 15…
Lastly and perhaps most importantly, from all of us at CYPT: Happy Holidays. We hope everyone has a relaxing break from school or work and that the New Year brings much creativity and happiness to you and yours!

Directed by Artistic Director Mat Mailandt
Fifteen years ago, founding Artistic Director Brian Dorscht directed CYPT’s inaugural production, Pinocchio at the Boris Roubakine Theatre. Flash forward a decade and a half: current Artistic Director Mat Mailandt will tackle same script with a brand new cast at the beautiful Vertigo Studio. Past collides with present in the closing production of CYPT’s Fifteenth Anniversary Season, where a wooden boy comes to life in a production to be remembered!

| CYPT Star Profile!
Throughout my life, I've participated in many different activities, from athletics to arts, but nothing compares to theatre. The opportunity to portray a new personality every time I get on stage is amazing and it gives me great joy and huge satisfaction to entertain an audience. The thrill of hearing an audience’s laughter is a feeling like no other. Knowing that you are responsible for their exhilaration and delight is a priceless experience. To know that all of an audience's attention is on me gives me a feeling of importance and responsibility that I love. I am so thankful that I chose to get involved in theatre last year and hope to pursue this new passion in the future.

My name is Shannon Murphy and I am currently in grade 11 at Sir Winston Churchill High School. I first became involved in CYPT last year, performing as Aunt Polly in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. Being a newcomer to the theatre world, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect, but what I discovered blew me away; acting gave me a rush that I had never gotten from my past activities. Since Tom Sawyer, I have been in two other CYPT productions, The Jungle Book, and more recently Robin Hood. Not only have I had the opportunity to act on stage and learn and grow as an actress, I have also met life long friends and talented directors. I am extremely grateful for the opportunities I have been able to experience and the doors that have been opened for me because of CYPT. If it wasn’t for CYPT, I might have never found out how remarkable theatre is and what a difference it could make in my life.

15th Anniversary Party – A Smashing Success!
On September 5, 2007 CYPT celebrated its 15th Anniversary – in style. We held our party for this important milestone at the beautiful Engineered Air Theatre. Everyone donned their best or most ridiculous costumes to fit the theme of masquerade ball chosen for the evening. The event was attended by instructors, past and present board members, and of course CYPT’s founding members Brian Dorscht and Jackie Pontin.
Mat Mailandt presents founder Brian Dorscht with an award.
Alongside with many CYPT families as well as friends of the company, we ate great food, handed out awards to important members of CYPT’s history and finished off the night dancing to the jazzy stylings of Frim Fram. Two of the members of the band, Joel Goundry and Dan Perrot, have even instructed for us in the past!
We also found time to present board member Jason Long’s play, The Complete History of CYPT. Current CYPT actors Kyle Visvanathan, Lars Renborg, Raya Hamadeh and Martin Law acted alongside instructors Paula Haffner and Laura Hildebrandt, as well as CYPT alumni Kelly Malcolm and past and present Artistic Directors Brian Dorscht and Mat Mailandt. Much fun was had remembering CYPT’s rich history through the staging of the funniest anecdotes of the past fifteen years. The show was directed by Mailandt and Long, who enjoyed the process of creating the show almost as much as the audience enjoyed watching it.

The event was tirelessly organized by board members: Kristy Reyner, Jane Meyer, Mark Hopkins, Jason Long, Mat Mailandt and Kevin Leibel. Many thanks to them for all of their hard work. The fact that the event was such an overwhelming hit is a testament to the recent success of the company, in productions, camps and classes. All of us here at CYPT can’t wait to celebrate the company’s next milestone. See you at the 30th Anniversary party!

| A Message From the President
Dear parents,
Calgary Young People's Theatre celebrates its fifteenth anniversary this year, and on this landmark occasion, the Board of Directors is hard at work to ensure another fifteen years of excellence in theatrical education.
As part of our ongoing board development activities, we are in search of a Parent Representative to speak on behalf of the families involved in our camps, classes and productions. Typical commitment for board members is one 1-hour meeting per month, plus committee and special project work as required. This is an excellent way to become more involved in CYPT's programs and your child's theatre training.
We are also looking for an Assistant Treasurer and a Vice President. If you think that finances or leadership are more up your alley, please do not hesitate to let us know!
If you are interested in joining our Board, please contact me at 403-710-0093 or president@cypt.ca.
Thank you, and happy holidays!
Mark Hopkins
President, Calgary Young People's Theatre
