What's New at CYPT?

From the Camp Coordinator

15th Anniversary Party!!! Come One, Come All!!!

CYPT Star Profile!

Calling All Actors: General Auditions For 15th Anniversary Season

Attention: CYPT Members

What’s New at CYPT?

First of all, thank you to Dan, Laura, Barb and Jason for all their fantastic work with this past spring’s Drumma Camp!  We saw some creative work and excellent drumming skills from all of our campers.

Time sure does fly by, and we are astonished to find that we are already halfway through our summer camp program.  The theme this year is Summer Safari Adventure and our campers are diving head first into the world of animals, creating plays about their favourite creatures.  In these first five weeks we’ve seen fantastic plays, creative costumes and incredible imagination from our campers. We look forward to finishing out the summer with more great acting, fun and laughs!

The Rockin’ Shakespeare two-week camps are always a blast!  So far this summer we have seen exciting renditions of Twelfth Night, Hamlet and Othello, and we look forward to a rockin’ adaptation of Taming of the Shrew.  Kids in these camps take a classic play from the Bard and spice it up with a little Rock and Roll.

Our preschool half-day camps have been going well. The young ones have been exploring the idea of Safari Adventure through songs, instruments, artwork and stories.  It is always exciting to see them parading in their costumes, making crafts and playing theatre games.  Performing for the older kids in the camp, as well as for their parents, is always a challenge, especially since many of them have never been on stage before.  But our brave young students always seem to approach it with a smile!

Rehearsals for our summer conservatory program started this week. Under the direction of CYPT instructor and rock musician Anton deGroot, a group of young people will perform an adapted version of William Shakespeare’s Hamlet. This performance takes place at Lunchbox Theatre, August 16-18. For more information call 230-2664.

Our professional camp instructors this year include Kristin Eveleigh, Paula Haffner, Charles Heffernan, Laura Hildebrandt, Barbara Kozicki, Mat Mailandt, Andrew Oberhofer, Leanne Padmos, Jeremy Park, Kelly Reay, Jessica Robertshaw and Sue Taylor.  We have also had some great assistants in Dan, Kelly, Martin and Stephanie!

CYPT Summer Camps 2006
2006 Summer Campers ROCKIN' OUT!

From the Camp Coordinator

Hello Parents,

My name is Erin Jenkins and I am the Summer Camp Coordinator for Calgary Young People’s Theatre.  Many of you have corresponded with me over the phone or by e-mail, and it was a pleasure to finally put a face to your voices once camps started.  In fact, I think I can safely say I have the honour of being the only person who will not miss a single day of camp this year!

My family and I have been involved with Calgary Young People’s Theatre for many years now.  I have had the opportunity to perform in various CYPT shows and even attended summer drama camps (that was a few years ago now!).  CYPT was essential in giving me my start in theatre, which has developed into a life-long love of the performing arts.  Having the opportunity to work with a company where I have learned so much and, in turn, sharing my knowledge with future generations of theatre artists has been very rewarding.

This year, the Summer Safari and Rockin’ Shakespeare Camps have been a ‘roaring’ success.  I have had the chance to do some teaching as well as coordinating this summer, and I have been consistently impressed with the dedication and creative intuition displayed by the students.  I am also so proud of all of our teachers and drama assistants, many of whom I have known over the years creating first-class theatre work. It is great to see the kids getting to work with such talented and fun individuals, and I know our instructors’ enthusiasm for the craft will encourage their students to continue their development in theatre, as my instructors did for me.

This year CYPT is celebrating a very special milestone: our 15th anniversary. This season promises to be better than ever, offering kids an opportunity to learn a wide range of skills, culminating in numerous performance opportunities.  I encourage you all to get involved with our upcoming season and I am looking forward to another great year with Calgary Young People’s Theatre.  Just Imagine!

15th Anniversary Party!!! Come One, Come All!!!

Calgary Young People’s Theatre is celebrating its 15th Anniversary in style at their gala celebration on September 8, 2007. The celebration is to take place at the Engineered Air Theatre, at the EPCOR CENTRE for the Performing Arts.  Doors open at 6:00 p.m. and the show begins at 7:00 p.m. Food, drinks and a live band will complete the atmosphere of this Masquerade Ball event.  All staff, alumni and friends of CYPT are invited!

Join us to reminisce about the CYPT’s story-filled past, celebrate the present and build the future.  The main event will be an original play by Jason Long, professional playwright and CYPT board member, recounting stories from CYPT’s rich history.  Dress up, don a mask and bring the whole family!  Reserve your tickets before they sell out, only $5 per person or $10 per family.  For tickets, call 230.2664 or fill out the online order form

See you at the ball!

CYPT Star Profile!

If you ever asked someone: Why do you enjoy acting? What does it mean to you to be up on that stage?  ...you would probably get a lot of different answers.  That question, like so many others, really has no right answer.  After all, drama doesn’t have the same meaning to everyone.  To some, it’s just a simple art.  To others, it’s a passion.  To me, it’s both and much more.

Acting gives me the opportunity to be anything that I want, to be something new and different every single time.  Every time I do something different from CYPT, I get to experience a whole new adventure!  However, to

me, acting isn’t just about the characters you play.  The audience is just as important.  Every character has something to say, something important to say.  I believe that sharing the character’s message with the audience is extremely important.

My name is Erika Cornelius, and I am thirteen years old.  I really love working with CYPT.  I’ve tried a few different classes with them, including Improvisation and Comedy, and even some Animation!  Some of the productions I have had the honour of being a part of include: The International Tales of Anansi, A Midsummer’s Night Rock Story and Hamlet.  CYPT offers amazing teachers and directors, as well as a great, friendly environment.  I have not only had the pleasure of making lots of new friends, but have also learned so many valuable lessons!  Thanks for the awesome experiences!  We’ll just have to see what other adventures you bring my way.
