February 2010
Calgary Young People's Theatre
presents
the
Building Bridges Program
For more than 17 years, CYPT has been introducing young people to theatre and acting. During that time it has come to our attention that the number of contemporary plays written specifically for young actors is pretty small and the number of those plays written by local playwrights is even smaller.
As a remedy to this situation, CYPT is launching the Building Bridges Program. We are looking to the local writing community. both amateur and professional, to submit plays, written specifically for young people that address the theme of Building Bridges. What that means to each writer is open to interpretation, but the theme of the play should highlight connections across cultural, geographic and generational boundaries.
Mat Mailandt, Artistic Director of CYPT is excited to see the new work that comes out of this program:
“Writing theatre for young people is both challenging and rewarding, but unfortunately it usually gets overlooked by our most talented local writers. The problem is that, every year our library of theatre for young audiences gets less and less contemporary and harder for our audiences and actors to relate to. With Building Bridges we are hoping to get writers excited about the genre with the added bonus of stocking our library with great new work.”
Building Bridges is open to playwrights ages 21 and over. Each entry should consist of one-act with a running length of no more than one hour. Additionally, each play should feature approximately 10 characters designed to be played by young actors.
All submissions will be reviewed by a panel of judges made up of theatre professionals from across the city. The first place winner will receive a $500 cash prize, donated by CYPT and a 2½ day workshop with actors and a dramaturge. The winning submission will then be produced in February 2011.
The second place winner will receive a cash prize, donated by cypt, a one-on-one consultation with a professional dramaturge and consideration for a possible future production.
Important Dates:
February 10 - call for submissions
April 30 - final due date for submissions (updated)
